The city of angels is a sprawling marvel of Thai culture and history, modern capital city, center of the government and the Thai monarchy. The Thai are remarkably friendly people, possibly the most open to foreigners of all Asians. This is the land of the BIG SMILE.  Access to this smorgasbord of experiences, you will remember for a lifetime,  is greatly enhanced if you can speak with the Thai in their own language. In Thai, pood phaasaa thai dai

For romance language speakers phaasaaThai offers a new linguistic challenge as it is a tone based language and tonal inflections are a major component of Thai grammar. Learning phaasaa Thai requires the student to develop their ear as well as learn a vocabulary, grammar and accent. This is best achieved in an immersion method of instruction, immersion in the sound and sights of the language and in the Thai culture. As many foreigners come to Thailand as adults, past educational experiences impact learning skills, speed and comfort. One can learn to speak only but you cut yourself off from the wealth of a new alphabet, from understanding your surroundings. Thus it is best to learn both speaking, reading and writing phaasaa Thai to maximize your experience in Thailand.

There are many language schools in Thailand and Bangkok, most are based on traditional class room concepts of language instruction that hold around the world. The rate of learning is defined by the slowest student in the group and most of the spoken Thai you will hear will be non Thai speakers, your fellow students.  A better approach is individualized instruction, one on one with a native Thai speaking trained language teacher. Add an authentic, restful Thai style building reflecting many aspects of Thai culture in art, religious icons, furniture and home fittings. I had the enormous good fortune to be referred to just such a school a couple of years ago, BAAN AKSORN. Located in the center of Bangkok’s trendy Sukhumvit Rd, close to the Skytrain and other public transportation it is a haven of peace and quiet, a place to meet gentle dedicated Thai teachers, a home away from home, a place to learn a new language and culture.

Your instruction is tailored to your specific needs and abilities, learning skills. My lessons with Khun Nussara have been the highlight of the week, my intellectual challenge, and the opportunity to make new friends. I have learned phaasaa Thai, R,R n speaking through a vale of humor, encouragement. Frankly one of, if not the most enjoyable intellectual activity since I entered the wasteland of retirement!   As an Emeritus Professor from academic medical practice, the basic materials were too simplistic to hold my attention. Khun Nussara in a stroke of pure genius, gave me the challenge I needed, my homework assignment from my second week of instruction was to write short stories of my own choice of topic in Thai phonetic. Thus, I was challenged and my innate drive kicked in to propel me to the top of this new hill. I spent a career climbing hills, this felt so right.
